How to analyse a sample MOOC programme

To help you identify whether or not a MOOC, whatever the subject, will help you develop (digital) soft skills, here is a sample MOOC programme with some useful tips on things to look for and questions to ask yourself.

The main questions to ask yourself are the following:

Time / Duration:

  • Am I available to study during this period?
  • Can I devote sufficient time to learning during this period?

Learning activities:

  • Are there individual activities which will help me develop (digital) soft skills?
  • Are there collaborative activities which will help me develop (digital) soft skills?
  • Do these activities require the use of social media and am I willing to do this?

Assessment and recognition of learning:

  • Does the MOOC offer a certificate? Is it free?
  • What kind of activities are required to obtain the certificate?
  • Does the certificate mention specific skills or just that I have completed the MOOC?
  • Does the certificate give me credits towards a higher education course?
  • Will a potential employer recognise the certificate?
  • Does the MOOC offer open badges?
(See also the article on recognition of achievement in this section.)
